Water-retention ponds

Burkina Faso : in activity

Foundation SEMAFO was eager to guide the population of Bana in setting up a water-holding pond. This is a first-ever for the Foundation. The chosen method, which is called « Technologie Do-noh » and was conceived by Japanese geotechnical engineers, is known for using bags of earth, for its labour-intensive character and for the minimal tools required. The project has enjoyed the full support of the population of Bana through the Sababugnuma Association. The Foundation provided all the material, including wheelbarrows, shovels, picks, dabas, manual tampers, buckets, cans, small tools as well as the experts in « Technologie Do-noh ».

If you take the efforts of 33 men/day over a period of 59 days, the association’s contribution amounts to close to $4,500 (FCFA 2,000,000) if you calculate $2.25 (FCFA 1,000) per day worked. The sages believe that the initiative offers a double advantage. Firstly, it provides a crossing point as it was very difficult to cross this area after heavy rain. Secondly, it gives the association the opportunity to develop other projects (watering of cattle and cultivation of vegetables).

In short

  • Donation of necessary equipment for the water-holding pond at Bana (2018-2019)
