Foundation SEMAFO’s objective is to alleviate poverty by helping communities in West Africa become self-sufficient through establishment of sustainable community, health, education and agricultural projects. SEMAFO Foundation is committed to making a difference in people’s daily life.
Targeting sustainable development goals
The new United Nations’ programme builds on the 8 Millennium Develpment Goals (MDG) adopted in 2000. Its 17 new goals were launched in 2016 with the intent of ending poverty, fighting inequality and injustice, in addition to tackling climate change by 2030. These Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be delivered in 3 ways: mainstreaming, acceleration and strategic support.
SEMAFO Foundation’s Objectives
SEMAFO Foundation primarily aligns its activities to six of the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations’ national agenda and, at different levels. On an individual basis, we work on the following objectives:
Our activities per objective
No poverty (SDG 1)
SEMAFO Foundation targets people living in vulnerable conditions. We guide rural communities by providing them with basic services.

– Revenue-generating projects
Zero Hunger (SDG 2)
Through revenue-generating projects based on sustainable agricultural practices, SEMAFO Foundation fosters a culture of entrepreneurship in the population to meet their essential needs. In this way, we are helping effect gradual change at economic and societal level.
– Market gardens

– Multi-functional platforms
Quality Education (SDG 4)
SEMAFO Foundation sets great store on education. For us, it is the groundwork on which we can build sustainable development. We are working to ensure that boys and girls have access to quality primary education.
– Building schools with access to drinking water and latrines
– Distributing school kits
– Annual award of bicycles to the most – deserving students and/or those with the furthest to travel
– Supporting extra-curricular activities
– Training school management committees
– Supporting school canteens
Gender Equality (SDG 5)
The Foundation helps promote gender equality and female empowerment with the object of accelerating sustainable development. Many of our projects bring women to the fore, allowing them to enhance their knowledge and secure a brighter future.
– Shea butter factory (production of shea-based products)

– Support for women with obstetric fistula
– Projects designed for men and/or women
Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6)
The Foundation strives to provide equal access to drinking water by installing the necessary facilities and promoting hygiene at all levels.
– Construction of drinking water borehole
– Recycling of waste
– Construction of latrines and showers
– Distribution of hand-washing facilities
Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17)
Partnerships are essential for the Foundation. In addition to the population, partners such as
TOTAL Burkina, OCADES, SACO, PNUD and several others are rallying to work on the
sustainable development goals. Through its shea and sesame projects, the Foundation promotes international trade.
